Port Smith Small Cell Installation
Company: Vitelergy Services
Date : 4th April 2023
Engaged by Telstra to complete various Small Cell installations across WA as part of the? MBSP5-WA Blackspot Small Cell program, Vitelergy Services was allocated the remote site of Port Smith.
At the request of Telstra the Port Smith site was accelerated to enable mobile coverage for the Kimberley Land Council (KLC), Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC), Aranja Limited and the Kimberley Language Resource Centre’s individual Annual General Meetings and triannual Law and Culture celebrations scheduled for 20 September 2021. These events were to be attended by approximately 500 people who would gather at the Port Smith Bird Park.
The installation at Port Smith was extremely remote, located in a cyclone region and presented a complex land tenure negotiation. Despite the challenges that were presented the Vitelergy Services team was able to successfully deliver the project and brought the small cell on air, on Saturday 18 September 2021.
An unexpected fire emergency effected the area on the 19 September 2021, as members began to arrive for the events of that weekend. As the emergency developed and moved towards the Port Smith Bird Park, emergency services successfully evacuated everyone in the area by using the mobile facilities that the Small Cell provided in the area. As a result, Vitelergy received a letter of gratitude from The Karajarri Traditional Lands Association (KTLA) for our efforts in meeting the accelerated completion date.
